Buying Tips

Behind the scenes…

When purchasing a piece of Artwork, whether it is from the Burdette Gallery or elsewhere, be sure you get information about the piece you are buying and about the Artist included with the piece. If it is an original, signed piece it may have information on the back of it written by the artist. Often, the title, the medium, the date completed, and possibly the inspiration behind the original piece of Artwork. The Artist, if present, may be happy to do so. Also be sure to get an Artists biography and contact information. You may decide you want to collect more.

If it is a Limited Edition Reproduction, including Giclee Editions, be sure that you are also receiving a Certificate of Authenticity if one exists. Some may not have one. It should indicate the title of the piece, the number of the piece and the total number produced . You need this document whether the piece is framed or unframed. Often you see this taped or glued to the back of the framed Reproduction. This is not the best way to have the document attached to the Artwork. Should you need to reframe the piece, the document is awkward to remove. It is also difficult to photocopy this document if it is attached should you need to do so for insurance or appraisal purposes. The practice we follow at the Burdette Gallery, and what you should insist on from whomever does your framing, is to put the document in a large white envelope and attach the envelope to the paper backing on the framed Reproduction. This way you know it is stored safely with the Artwork but easy to remove to read it or make photocopies. We also include in the envelope any biographical information on the Artist, promotional material on the Reproduction itself, which often tells a little more about the Original Painting the Reproduction is based on. We also include hanging instructions for the piece of framed Artwork and contact information for the Gallery should you need to get in touch with us for any reason.

We feel this is just good framing practice and a great way to help you protect and appreciate your investment.
