The
Burdette Gallery was built on weekends between 1977 and 1980 by
Paul Burdette on his country property in Orton, less than an
hour's drive north of Toronto, west of Orangeville, to show not only
his award-winning carvings, but the original works and
limited edition prints of artists from around the world. The
Burdettes retired and sold the Gallery at the end of 1999.
The Burdette Gallery is now owned by Dr. Cormack, a retired
veterinarian, well known in the Orangeville/Mono Mills
area as the owner of the Tralee Veterinary Clinic and Estate. Dr. Cormack is a
colourful and charming man who is often at the Gallery in the
afternoon enjoying a cup of tea. He is always willing to share
with listeners tales of adventures in the Air Force during World
War Two, stories of his horses and carriages, travels, his art
purchases or his dreams for the Gallery.
The Burdette Gallery
is nestled amongst 65 acres of whispering
pines and rolling meadows near the Niagara Escarpment.
There is plenty to explore around the Gallery. There are trails
through the woods, past the meadows and between the three ponds. There are picnic areas where
families can enjoy the peace and quiet of the country during
Gallery hours. You can
also experience some of the abundance of wildlife on the
property. Deer and rabbits are often seen, and countless
songbirds frequent the feeders around the Gallery. We also have
a 40-foot-diameter stone circle. In the winter the property
is open during Gallery hours for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
The
Gallery represents approximately 100 artists who are locally,
nationally and internationally renowned. The walls are full of
paintings and there are three dimensional sculptures standing on
the floor. Stained glass panels hang in the windows and
decorative pieces from the ceiling.
The Burdette
Gallery hosts a number of gala events each year. Gallery shows
feature artists displaying their newest original
works of art. All events are widely publicized and well
attended by the public.
Gallery staff are available
to answer any questions or help guide your visit. If you prefer
to explore the Gallery on your own, there are biographies posted
with artists' work to help make your self-guided tour more
informative. The Burdette Gallery welcomes bus tours
and special interest groups.
Come,
visit the Burdette Gallery and enjoy the property, a showpiece
of natural beauty, and the peace and quiet of the country. The fresh
air and smell of pine needles and aspen leaves, the sounds of birds and
the breeze in the trees are only the start of your experience.
